High school is way different from College. College is the stage where you get to choose what you want to do for the rest of your life. This is your training ground for the real world. What you learned in high school will be enhanced in college. High school graduates sometimes mistakenly think that college can ruin their lives and the friendship they built throughout the years in high school that’s why other students are stuck comparing high school with college even if they haven’t seen the real deal in college. Some students are not yet ready to face college because they're having low self-esteem and lacking of encouragement to look at the brighter side of entering a new school…a university.
I have five simple ways you can survive your whole college life, whether it’s a 4-year, 5-year or 6-year course.
1. Choose the course that you really love.
Passion before mission. Choose the course that best describes you. Don’t let your parents interfere with your decisions. Talk to them and tell them what you really like. You have to fight for whatever you want. You're considered as an adult now, you have to make tough decisions by yourself...decisions that you really like. You don't have to listen to whatever other people say, you have to listen to you heart...who gets tired of the saying: follow your heart? No one! haha! You will never enjoy something that you never wanted…EVER!
2. Keep your “friendship door” open.
New world with new people. College means new environment and new friends. Boost your confidence by starting a conversation with the one sitting beside you on your first day of class. Giving yourself a chance to meet new people doesn't mean you’re already replacing your high school friends with new ones. College friends are the ones you can count on when it comes to major exams and some wicked projects and they’re the ones who will understand the new you. Remember, what you are in high school is 50% different from what you can become in college. You can never ask a high school friend who is now a medical major about your project in your major class especially if you are far beyond the medicine field. Adjustments…we get that a lot.
3. Never ever miss a deadline.
Less lies, less denials. Don’t get used to the high school drama: “Can I pass it tomorrow because I forgot it at home? Or I was sick yesterday that’s why I haven't finish the paperwork yet.” You are not a high school student anymore! If when you were in high school, teachers can accept late submission because of medical reasons or your family-related reasons then let me tell you this, then in college deadline literally means DEAD. You’re lucky if your professor accepts late submissions but if your prof is a submit or omit kind of person then you have to learn how to keep your time organized, learn how to do your homework alone and learn how to meet deadlines. The only thing that exempts you from passing something on time is if you died on that very same day. That’s not a joke though! :P
4. Get high grades flowing.
Be at your best. If you are the last person on the list when you were high school then this is your time to shine. This happens all the time, your bully friend in high school is now the top of the class in college. College is a door for improvements and change, but don’t get overwhelmed, you only have to change for the better not for something worse. It's better to have good grades than stay average for your whole life. C'mon, improvements are way better than having no change at all.
5. Give yourself a treat.
You know this one! College people get to have a taste of the both worlds; young and adult. Clubs, parties, coffee dates, movie and shopping spree, name it and you can definitely have it. But that doesn’t mean you have to be on the club every night, dancing your ass out and drinking until you drop. You get to have these things during weekends, but make sure you are responsible enough to handle the new adult world. After a long week of projects and all, give yourself a quality time/treat. Bury yourself on the couch and do a movie marathon with you college buddies, hit the club and party on a Saturday and be home on a Sunday. (oops! This is for legal age only) or the best way to enjoy a day after a stressful week is to talk to your high school friends over the phone and do some Catching up. This is the best way to keep your friendship with them…keep in touch…ALWAYS.
You don’t have to be hard on yourself. What lies after high school is a replica of the world you are chiseled for. You get to choose whatever you want but at the same time you are the one responsible to make all of that happen. Don’t be afraid of changes, because no one gets to change for something worse, we always look for something better.
